HISTORY OF THE MEIGS AVENUE CHURCH OF CHRIST

On March 24, 1940, the Jeffersonville Church of Christ met for the first time at the Red Mens Hall, located at Spring and Chestnut Streets. Thirty persons were present on that occasion.
On May 15, 1942, the store building at 500 E. Chestnut St. was rented, and services were held there until 1948.
In 1943, a lot was purchased at 9th and Meigs Avenue. Because of insufficient funds during and after the war, the construction of a building was delayed until 1948. The original building at 9th & Meigs was a 36' x 60' structure and cost approximately $10,000.00. The “Opening Day” service was held September 5, 1948.
During the mid 1950's, the church began to grow rapidly which necessitated the expansion of the building. The auditorium was enlarged and four classrooms added during 1955.
An important milestone was reached in 1956 when the first elders and deacons were appointed.
Between 1957 and 1960, the membership continued to grow. Two wings were added to the auditorium, a parking lot was built, and a new preacher's residence was purchased which was located at the rear of the property. In 1958, the work in Panama was begun under the direction of Bob Bryson.
The church continued to grow until the spring of 1964. At that time several families left the Meigs Avenue church to form a new congregation which became known as the Northside Church of Christ.
In 1969, the congregation purchased a new preacher's home in the Northaven sub-division. This home is still being used today.
Another building program was undertaken in 1974. A new auditorium was constructed and joined to the existing structure. The old building was then used entirely for classrooms and offices.
The growth of the congregation continued until 1983. At that time several members left and formed a new congregation which became known as the South Clark Church of Christ.
In 1990, the Meigs Avenue Church of Christ celebrated its “50th Anniversary” as a congregation of the Lord's church in Jeffersonville.
God has richly blessed the Meigs Avenue congregation in spite of many difficulties. Today, there is a special joy and friendliness among us. Our goal is to “preach the truth in love”. Our prayer is that God will bless us as we remain faithful to Him.
