Now it came to pass that Spring turned to Summer again. God's people raised their voices and said:
Recreation is My shepherd, I shall not stay at home; He maketh me to lie down in a sleeping bag; He leadeth me down the Interstate each weekend. He restoreth my suntan; He leadeth me to the state parks for comfort's sake. Even though I stray on the Lord's Day, I will fear no reprimand, for Thou art with me; my rod and my reel they comfort me. I annointest my skin with oil, my gas tank runneth over; Surely my trailer shall follow me all the weekends this summer; and I shall return to the House of the Lord this fall.
I love summer vacation as much as the next guy. As a matter of fact, I am convinced that everyone needs to take some time away from the normal routine of life and unwind occasionally. It is healthy. However, there are some people who take that period of vacation and refreshment and forget the One who made it all possible. You can take off of work, leave behind your business and professional obligations, but your Christian obligations never take a break. I would like to make the following suggestions as you prepare for this summer and the ones to follow:
1. Check the long-range calendar and if possible try not to schedule vacation during big events (special events of the local congregation LS).
2. Before you leave for the weekend, consult a church directory (available in our office) and find a church that will be close to your vacation destination. Find their web-site or call for service times and directions.
3. If you are a teacher, or scheduled to serve Sunday or Wednesday that you will be gone, make sure that you make the appropriate arrangements so that someone can be prepared to serve or teach in your place.
4. Leave your contribution behind with someone or make it up the Sunday when you return. The church's financial obligations do not cease during summer vacation.
5. Take your Bible. Before you spend 5 hours on the golf course or a day on the water, spend some time in God's word. When you get away from the hustle and bustle of daily living it is amazing how much easier it is to comprehend the Bible. Read the creation story as you watch the sun rise over the horizon of the ocean.
6. Enjoy your vacation; just don't leave God out of your plans.
