A Note from the Preacher…Larry Sweeney

The Power of Love

“Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not murder,' 'You shall not steal,' 'You shall not bear false witness,' 'You shall not covet,' and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” (Romans 13:8-10).

The power of love is nowhere more clearly defined than in Romans 13:8-10. The text reveals the following points concerning love's power and place in our lives:

        1. Love is a debt we owe everyone.
        2. Love forbids adultery.
        3. Love forbids murder.
        4. Love forbids stealing.
        5. Love forbids a false witness.
        6. Love forbids covetousness.
        7. Love sums up all the other commandments.
        8. Love does no harm to a neighbor.
        9. Love is the fulfillment of the law.

What will truly change our lives? What will change society? What will do more to win people to Christ than any other virtue?
LOVE!! Love is the debt we owe everyone. It is a debt that can never be paid in full. Thus, we must continue to love as long as we live.
Let's close with 1 John 2:5, “But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.”
