A Note from the Preacher…Larry Sweeney

The time for our Gospel Meeting has arrived! If you are reading this before Friday evening (28th), I want to remind you that the worship for both Friday and Saturday evening begins at 7:00 PM. Our Sunday worship will be at the regular times. We will be sharing a fellowship meal following the morning service. The Gospel Meeting concludes Sunday evening at 6:00 o'clock.
Sunday is also Friend's Day. We warmly welcome each of our visitors. Please allow us to serve any of your spiritual needs. In addition, you are encouraged to stay and join us for the fellowship meal. We want to meet you, and hope that you will give us an opportunity to become better acquainted.
We also welcome Ben Flatt and his wife, Judy, to Meigs Avenue. Ben will be doing the preaching for our meeting. We thank God for Ben and Judy's love and dedication to the Lord and His work. We look forward to growing spiritually through Ben's gospel preaching.
The theme for the meeting is: Families: Ours and God's. Few themes are timelier for the age in which we live. God's first institution was the home (Genesis 2:18-24). In the home we find love, companionship, acceptance, security, teaching, and training. At the center of the home is Christ. If we order our homes according to the Lord's will, we will be blessed beyond measure.
“God's family” is the church – the body of Christ – with Christ as the head (Ephesians 2:22-23). The church was established on the first Pentecost following the resurrection of Jesus (Acts 2). We know that the saved are in the church. Acts 2:47 says, “And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” Ephesians 5:23 states, “Christ is the head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.” As head of the church, the Lord provides the criteria for membership in His family. Jesus taught, “For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother” (Mark 3:35). Those who were saved on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2) first heard the preaching of the apostles, which led them to believe in Jesus as the Christ. Acts 2:37 tells us, “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Peter's reply is in verse 38 and includes a command to repent and be baptized: “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Three thousand people obeyed that command.
Today, if we hear the same gospel as was taught by the apostles in Acts 2, and do what they did – repent and be baptized – we will receive what they received – remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Are you ready to obey the gospel? We will be glad to assist you in your study and obedience! --Larry Sweeney

Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. Now as they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. (Acts 8:35-38)
