A Note From the Preacher…Larry Sweeney

Genesis: Fact or Myth?

The first chapter of the Bible opens with these powerful words, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1). The inspired summary of God's six days of creative work is found in Genesis 2:1. “Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.”

There are those who attempt to undermine the creation account of Genesis by labeling it an allegory or even a Hebrew myth. In fact, some will attempt to dismiss the entirety of Genesis 1 – 11. One thing this group fails to recognize is that if the Bible is unreliable at the very beginning, then the integrity of the whole book is in question. In other words, Genesis 1-11 is essential to the remainder of the Bible. If man is not made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27), if he did not fall as Genesis relates (Genesis 3), if there was not a flood as recorded in Genesis 6-8, then a multitude of problems develop with the entire Bible and even with Christ himself.
For example, Jesus acknowledged the creation account as recorded in the Bible. Jesus taught in Matthew 19:4 that God made man and woman and that He made them at the “beginning.” Moreover, Jesus mentioned the flood. He called it “the flood” indicating that this was not just any flood but “the” flood.” He also called Noah by name and alluded to the ark. Jesus acknowledged the flood as a historical fact.
Now, which will it be? Is Jesus a liar? Was the Son of God deceived? Was He ignorant of the facts? We answer “NO” to each of these. The Son of God recognized the first few chapters of Genesis as historically correct, and we should too.
Beloved, I affirm without hesitation that we have no reason to doubt the biblical explanation of the origin of life.
